“Ajax” (Gr: “Aias”) is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. Although the exact date of its first performance is unknown, most scholars date it to relatively early in Sophocles‘ career (possibly the earliest Sophoclean play still in existence), somewhere between 450 BCE to 430 BCE, possibly around 444 BCE.

Sophocles turns tradition inside out, portraying Aias' suicide not as a disgrace but as heroism.

It is a theme which springs naturally from the figure of Ajax as Sophocles found it already formed in saga and drama, the figure of a man of fierce impulse and action, whose hate for his enemies led him to attempt a monstrous act of violence and, when it failed, to kill himself.
